Cleaning Between Rentals: A Checklist for Boatsetter and Get My Boat Owners in Miami

The reset after every rental, the weekly and monthly schedule, and why a clean rental boat protects your reviews.

By Loris Feret, owner of 305 Detailing Miami

Short answer: a rental boat in Miami should get a quick reset after every rental (trash, rinse, cooler, head, seats, photos) and a full hand wash at least once a week if it rents several times a week. Add a deep clean every month and a wax every few months. A clean boat is the cheapest way to protect your reviews and your booking rate.

Renting a boat on Boatsetter, Get My Boat or a similar platform turns it into a small business, and cleaning becomes part of the job. Boatsetter itself tells owners to detail the boat after each trip if they want 5-star reviews and repeat bookings. In Miami, where a single sandbar day can leave a boat covered in salt, sand and sunscreen, that matters even more.

The reset after every rental

This is what needs to happen between two groups, even on a same-day turnaround:

  1. Walk-through and photos. Photograph the boat as it comes back: deck, seats, console, hull sides. If something is damaged or the boat comes back very dirty, you have proof for the platform.
  2. Trash and lost items. Empty every bin, check under seats and in compartments.
  3. Cooler and drink holders. Empty, rinse and leave open to dry. Spilled drinks are the main source of smells.
  4. Fresh-water rinse. Deck, cockpit, console, stainless and glass. Salt left to dry is what makes the next wash hard.
  5. Seats and cushions. Wipe down sunscreen and spills, then dry. Sunscreen stains vinyl fast in the Miami sun.
  6. Head, if there is one. Clean, check supplies.
  7. Towels, fenders and lines. Swap towels if you provide them, stow lines and fenders where renters expect them.
  8. Last look from the dock. The first thing the next group sees is the boat from the dock. It has to look ready.

Why it pays for itself

  • Reviews. Cleanliness is one of the first things renters comment on. A dirty boat costs you more than one booking.
  • Listing photos. A boat that is waxed and clean photographs better, and the listing photos are often the only thing renters judge before booking.
  • Wear. Rental boats get more traffic than private ones. Salt, sand and sunscreen left on the boat age the vinyl, non-skid and gelcoat much faster.
  • Disputes. If a renter brings the boat back very dirty, check your platform’s rules: on some platforms you can ask for compensation for the cleaning cost, with photos and an invoice.

Doing it yourself vs hiring it out

The reset between rentals is often done by the owner or the captain. The weekly wash and the monthly deep clean are where most owners hand it off, because they take hours and need the right products. Boats used for charters or rented almost every day can be washed weekly on request in our maintenance plans, and plan members get priority when a last-minute booking or a messy return needs a fast turnaround.
